Tours / Visits To The Bee Shop
We are now offering educational bee themed activity visits for daycares and school children Kindergarten to Grade 12. A University level tour is also available. Several bee themed activities are offered, with some being seasonal.
Each visit can include a cup of honey lemonade. A honey stick, which represents as much honey as a honeybee can make in her lifetime. A tasting of some local honey. A visit to the rooftop apiary.
Each visit is about an hour long (longer can be arranged). Cost per child starts at $15 + HST . And the visiting group, (minimum group size 10 children) can select one of the following activities per visit:
Honeybee Vision Activity
Ever wonder how honeybees see? Here we explain how these beneficial insects use their ultraviolet vision to pollinate flowers faster and better. And how they are able to see and make perfect hexagons. Interactive activities are done with fascinating accompanying explanations.
Beeswax Candle Making
Children are taught how the honeybees are solar insects. That they adore the sun and have a sort of solar compass and their flight paths are modeled after the sun's rays distributional patterns. The flame of their beeswax candle that they get to make and keep is as close to pure sunlight as one can get.
Pollination Activity
Children are taught the basics of honeybee pollination. How these tremendously beneficial creatures help to ensure our nation's food supply. Pollinator garden and / or pollination activities with pollinator garden design and pollen detection and identification are available and the learning level can be adjusted depending on the grade level.
Phytotherapy
Mostly for older grades, the medicinal properties of plants that honeybees use to make their honeys are extolled along with the various associated healing benefits and how to use honey for wound management etc.
Various activities are often dovetailed to help with the teachers teaching various parts of their grade's Ontario Educational Curriculum requirements.
